L. Elango, professor, Department of Geology, said the enhanced box model was integrated with the hydrological modelling system and the HEC-river analysis system to assess the performance of the Chembarambakkam reservoir with data from the 2015 floods.
According to a study on spatio-temporal rainfall and meteorological drought by Department of Geology, Anna University, the localities near the coast such as Mylapore, Chepauk and Nungambakkam may experience dry spells more frequently in the coming decades.
The Department of Geology, Anna University, has teamed with IIT Madras to look into ways to augment water sources, including diverting floodwater from rivers to quarries, and mitigate floods in the Chennai river basin.
IIT-Madras has already successfully demonstrated the model. Its 4 MLD plant receives and treats the entire sewage the campus generates. Two groundwater wells dug up in a pond receive the treated water after ultra filtration and mix it with lake water.
L.Elango, Professor, Department of Geology, Anna University, said, “We had recommended that the Chembarambakkam lake be deepened by one metre greater than its original capacity to enhance its storage.”
